Each drew a pair of hands in an expressive pose using stippling technique, then cut them out and collaged them onto a painted, patterned piece of paper.

Helpful Hints:
- To introduce the lesson, we discussed body language as a class. I demonstrated some hand gestures and asked the students what they thought I was trying to say. I also asked students to demonstrate. For instance, "What do your hands do when your on a roller coaster?" "What do your hands do when you meet someone for the first time?" etc.
- We also discussed how colors and patterns can have various meanings. I asked the students what colors they associate with certain emotions. We also talked about complementary and analogous color schemes.
- I provided the students a packet of pictures of various hand gestures and a page of sign language.
- Our supply closet did not have ballpoint pens, so we used permanent markers. i emphasized that students use lots of dark dots in dark areas, and lots of light dots in light areas.
- I gave a study guide and a brief anatomy of the hand quiz so that students could understand the underlying structure.
- Next time I teach this assignment, i will have students pair off and "model" the hand gestures for one another for five minutes.
